Signs You Might Have a Mold Problem

Mold problems rarely announce themselves. Most homeowners notice a musty smell, a water stain, or an allergy flare-up long before they see visible growth, and by then, it has usually been developing for weeks.
A musty or earthy odor that lingers in a specific room, especially a bathroom, basement, or closet, is often the first sign. Mold produces its own distinct smell as it grows, even before you can see it.
Watch for discoloration on walls, ceilings, or around windows: dark spots, water stains, or peeling paint often mean moisture is getting in. Condensation on windows or pipes, or a home that feels persistently damp, points to the same underlying issue.
Health symptoms matter too. Recurring headaches, congestion, coughing, or worsening allergy and asthma symptoms that improve when you leave the house can be a sign of indoor mold exposure.
If any of this sounds familiar, an inspection gives you a clear answer rather than a guess. It is faster and cheaper to catch a problem early than to deal with structural damage later.
